Editorial : 2005 The Novelties

In taking over the reins of this prestigious event, the famous winter classic behind the legendary « Rallye Monte Carlo », organizers Viviane and Patrick Zaniroli, have sought to revive the event’s sporting dimension and unite enthusiastic owners of classic cars.

To this end, the 50th edition will bring together ‘modern’ classics marques, such as Porsche, Alpine, MG, Lancia, Austin, Alfa, BMW, Ford, Daf and put them alongside pre-war machines such as Lagonda Tourers, Graham Paiges, Alvis Speeds, MGTAs and the Triumph Glorias.

The first group made the event a legend in the 60s, and the second group kept it in fine health over these last 30 years, as an historic tour.

A single regularity rally for all categories

While it is true that a regularity rally is best suited to vehicles from the 50s, 60s and 70s, the pre-war cars appreciate them just as much and proved it last year by showing that they were capable of covering the entire route in this category. Which is why for 2005 a single event will be offered with the same route for all, 3 loops of approximately 250 km per day. In accordance with their age, pre-war cars will have to drive at an average of 40 kph, vehicles between 1945 and 1959 at 45 kph and the ‘youngsters’ between 1960 and 1975 at 50 kph. However there will be two distinct classifications: one for pre-war cars and another for post war vehicles, with the total number of vehicles limited to 80.

Human size and conviviality

These important details will allow specialists of historic events to rub shoulders with famous drivers in all simplicity. It was in this spirit that such great names from the world of automobile racing such as Henri Pascarolo, Bruno Saby, Claude Laurent and Erik Comas came along on the inaugural event in 2004 and enjoyed themselves so much – for them the Neige et Glace is a mythic rally.

The 40 French, Belgian, Dutch, Swiss, English, Italian and even Hungarian crews who came along in 2004, the many drivers from the region and a public passionate about motor-sport, who saw the rebirth of a grand event, showed that there is a real interest in conserving such a fantastic event and ensure the success of the next edition.

In this way the rally retains a human dimension and fair-play will be the order of the day. To ensure this, the regulations are simple: the road-book will be distributed each day, avoiding any reconnaissance (on pain of exclusion from the event). Opening cars, as well as all electronic equipment has quite simply been banned.
