This was certainly true for Roland Gumpert, the German engineer entrusted with designing a new 4x4 for the German army: the VW Iltis.In September 1979, Patrick Zaniroli managed to persuade Gumpert to enter his car in the new long-distance off-road rally everyone was talking about: the Paris-Dakar.
The rest is history; except that behind the glorious image of the driver, as with the sporting event director (as lauded for his abilities as he is criticized for his stubbornness) -- hides a long love story and deep-rooted passion for Africa. Despite Zaniroli’s serious focus on managing events over the years, he has never forgotten his early days as amateur driver way back when. That’s what makes him the ideal person to head up this new adventure balancing enjoyment and friendship for all!

Now that he’s plotted out 15 ATLAS and 13 DAKAR, Patrick Zaniroli knows Africa like the back of his hand. After eleven years as off-road racer himself, he became the sporting director of the famous Dakar rally in 1994. He then took on all the many, complex responsibilities this position entails year after year until just recently when he decided to step down.In 1986 he launched his own events organizing business and for the past 6 years they have specialized in regularity rallies, with the Princesses’ Rally and the Snow & Ice Rally. Both events have been gaining notoriety with each year’s increasing success.
Organising sporting events is like second-nature for Zaniroli, but since he insists on delivering the ultimate on every level, he has brought together a host of experts to cover each aspect of the event to a tee.
